There is an interesting development in the context of western GS. WKC, the one organization what is widely known for it’s strict (for some, too strict) position on proper technique, changes it’s rules to allow ”overhead anyhow” in the Jerk and Lonc Cycle events:
Of course, this doesn’t affect the finnish or international rules in any way but I don’t see why this would make sense. The WKC and it’s material and attitude towards good technique has affected many Finnish lifters and coaches in a direct and non direct way over the years. And I think that has been a positive thing, because frankly a lot of the western kettlebell material has been quite poor in regarding the technique principles.
Of course, it’s too early to say how this will affect their meets and other people’s ideas on technique. For me, as a fanatic, this should also mean that the event names should be changed to something else as a Jerk. Maybe Overhead Anyhow?
We used to do some overhead anyhow meets for beginners a few years back. It was an ok way to get beginners to do long sets in a platform but after that I think it’s a good idea to start raising the bar. Because people will always go where the bar is set, and if it’s too low, I don’t think it’s good for the quality in general.
